Long and Lean

Dear Peighton,

Today was your 9 month visit with Dr. Davies.  I can not believe you are 9 months old already - how time flies when you are having fun!  You had to get another round of shots which is getting harder and harder for me to witness because you seem to be more aware of what is happening during your doctor visits.  You really detested getting your length/height, head circumference, and weight measured.  I suppose I can understand, you are totally naked in a strange environment with a strange person doing strange things to you.  Your head circumference is in the ninetieth percentile (I don't have the actual measurment), your height is 28 inches which is the fiftieth percentile, and your weight is 16 pounds 14 ounces - the tenth percentile!  You are tall and skinny with a big brain my dear, what could be better than that, ha!  I, of couse, am worried about your weight dropping in percentile (it was previously the 25th percentile) so I am going to start feeding you an extra meal a day.  You are just coming off of a week of diarrhea and lack of food consumption.

Wow, I just came across this post listed as a "draft".  You were 9 months when I wrote this!  Wow!  You are now 2 years, 3 months and several days!

Japanese Maple

Dear Peighton,

After our spaghetti and meatball dinner tonight, you wanted to "do chalk" in the driveway which Mommy always enjoys and agrees to.  We headed outside, you dressed in only a diaper which is an improvement seeing that typically you go out completely "naked butts".  We made a road for you matchbox cars which entertained you for about 10 minutes.  After that you were ready for bigger and better things so we pulled out your red plastic car and Mommy pushed you around the driveway for another 10 minutes.  Suddenly, I had the idea that we should try off-roading!  We went up and down the hill, around the house, back down to the driveway and up the hill again.  We stopped off to see your tree, the Japanese Maple with stunted growth that was in the garden when we bought the house.  It's your tree because it has red leaves and you have beautiful red hair, and you love this tree.  Earlier in the summer, you paid a lot of attention to the tree for about a week, visiting the front yard to say hello quite often.  I guess after that week you kind of forgot about the tree and had other outdoor interestes.  Well today, my dear, your amazing memory and vocabulary amazed me once again.  We pulled your car up to the tree and you immediately wanted to get out.  You walked up to the tree and touched a leaf and said "Hello tree, I have missed you!" very matter of fact.  You are the most adorable child and as you grow in height and weight, you grow in personality!  You have a huge heart and it's so exciting to see how much you love people, toys, and TREES!  I love you!

Trunk

Dear Peighton,

While you were at daycare today, I had a little downtime during my work day.  I was in Guilford, CT and decided to stop at a cute little store on Route 1 to look for a gift for your newest cousin (who is still in Auntie Jess' belly).  While I was there I discovered the most adorable stuffed animals and I simply could not resist.  As you will come to quickly realize, I have a love for all things vintage - clothing, furniture, boots, and TOYS!  Every Sunday at The Elephant Trunk I search for vintage piggy banks and toys for you.  I avoid anything stuffed because, well, the stuffing scares me quite frankly.  If it's material of any sort, I prefer to purchase it new for you but that limits the stuffed animal choices to the new stuffed animals and they just don't have the same appeal as the adorable older stuffed animals that I remember from my childhood with squished noses and misplaced arms.  Much to my suprise, Just Hatched, had a line of plush toys made to look aged!  They had an elephant that I just knew you would love with fluffy gray fur, a huge trunk, oversized belly, and long skinny lets and arms!  Now, I did not expect it to repace "Pinky" you very tattered and torn pink blanket with silk edges that you have kept with you every waking moment since you went to school about a year ago.  I secretly hoped that it would replace you love for "Light Queen" (aka Lightning McQueen from Cars) because I have spent countless hours searching for "Big Light Queen" and "Baby Light Queen" in the morning before work and school.  Well, replace your favorites it did not.  But it was delightful when I asked you what you would like to name your new toy and you came up with "Trunk".  You kept Trunk with you for most of the night but wanted to leave him in the rocking chair while we read our nighttime stories and I though he would end up piled up with the 100 other stuffed animals you have cast off...BUT, then when it was time for lights out you asked for him, hugged him, and fell asleep with him in your arms.  Will Trunk replace Pinky or Light Queen?  It's too soon to tell but just so we are clear, Mommy wouldn't be totally disappointed if you decided that you wanted to drag him everywhere you go instead of your tattered, dirty, and potentially germ filled pink blanket.  I love you my darling!
